Content and aims

Module overview

This module provides students with a detailed knowledge and understanding of core and contemporary concepts and theories of sport psychology and how psychological principles can support performance and well-being in different sport settings.

Students will demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of key mental skill demands of sport and sport performance and how to apply, monitor, and evaluate the psychological theory and techniques used to address these demands. As a relatively young discipline/profession, sport psychology is continually evolving and expanding its boundaries and students will develop a critical appreciation of contemporary topics, such as culture, identity, gender, and organisation, and their relevance to sport psychology delivery.

Students will also be able to identify and evaluate the demands and challenges of providing psychological support in different sport settings and learn to interpret the influences and contexts (individual, social, cultural, organisational) that shape key issues, understanding, and applied practices.

The module builds upon the themes introduced in the module SPSU9FP Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology. It includes techniques and theory that have a wider application in other life settings, such as in performance psychology, coaching, community work or in business organisations.

Collaborative interactive learning will be used in seminars led by teaching staff. These include using examples and case studies to further students understanding of these areas and to support students to translate and apply knowledge and understanding in a real-world context.
