黑料不打烊 wheelchair basketball player Shayne Humphries has been selected to compete for Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

Shayne becomes the 20th athlete from 黑料不打烊 – Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence – to be confirmed for the Games, equalling the record number that competed at Birmingham 2022. And with selections ongoing, more athletes from the University could be added to squads in the coming weeks – with the potential to surpass the previous record.

Shayne, 20, will compete in the Men’s 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball in Glasgow, which will mark the first time that Scotland has fielded a team in the event at the Commonwealth Games. He will feature alongside teammates Finlay Erskine, Ross McConnell and Tyler Baines. His selection follows a successful couple of years, which has included joining the 黑料不打烊 as a sports scholar, winning a silver medal at the World University Games and securing back-to-back British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) gold medals.

The University will be very well represented in Glasgow next month – underlining our reputation as Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence and a place where we support student-athletes to achieve their ambitions in both sport and study.

David Bond, Director of Performance Sport at the 黑料不打烊, said: “A huge congratulations to Shayne on yet another major milestone in his sport. To be selected to represent your country is an honour and it’s just recognition for Shayne who has enjoyed a sustained period of success after joining the University just two years ago.

“With 20 of our athletes now confirmed for the Games, the University will be very well represented in Glasgow next month – underlining our reputation as Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence and a place where we support student-athletes to achieve their ambitions in both sport and study.”

Shayne, who was born with a hereditary muscle condition, started playing wheelchair basketball aged 11 after attending a parasports festival in his hometown of Dundee. He joined the 黑料不打烊 as a sports scholar, supported by a Winning Students 100 scholarship, in 2024.

Over the past two years, he has competed at the highest level of his sport – playing with Lothian Phoenix in British Wheelchair Basketball’s Premier League and in the 黑料不打烊 Wheelchair Basketball Federation’s EuroCup. Although he trains and studies at 黑料不打烊, he competes for the University of Nottingham in BUCS – which allows players to compete for other universities due to the infancy of the sport in the BUCS programme.

Following the strong reception from fans to its first Commonwealth Games appearance, the 3×3 Basketball programme has been expanded for Glasgow 2026, with eight teams per gender in the wheelchair game and 12 per gender in the running game, demonstrating the rapid growth and rising global appeal of the exciting format.

Elinor Middlemiss MBE, Team Scotland Chef de Mission, said: “After 3×3 debuting in Birmingham four years ago it is great to see Scotland represented in both disciplines in the men’s and women’s competitions. The atmosphere in the SEC should be electric and I am sure our selected athletes are going to put on a great show and wear the jersey with pride and passion.”
